Please save this date, Sunday, May 5

Attention CVEC Members!

We are approaching the end of another CVEC academic year with much to celebrate. We hope you’ve been able to sample a few of the diverse courses available this past year. We encourage you to join us for a celebration at our Annual Membership Meeting.

Please mark your calendars to join us on Sunday, May 5, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, from 2-3:30 PM. In addition to a wonderful selection of homemade pies, we will briefly attend to the organizational requirements of electing new board members, recognizing retiring members of our board, 5 and 10 year instructors, and a report of our finances.

We urge you to join us as we recognize three special staff members who are retiring this year. Ed Lufkin, Jim McDonnell and Dave Halsor are passing their job descriptions and notebooks on to new staff members. Each of them will offer personal reflections from their roles and introduce their successors. As always, a centerpiece will be the presentation of our courses and faculty for next fall, all accompanied by our memorable desserts and coffee.

Please join us to celebrate the successes of the past three years and personally welcome our new staff members. The afternoon promises another pleasant gathering of the CVEC members.

Hope to see you there!

ReJean Schulte, CVEC Board Chair

Conversations that Matter

Co-sponsored by the CVEC, the Northfield Senior Center is presenting a series intended to help people think about, and plan for, their own death. This is a topic many would rather avoid until a health crisis forces decisions to be made. Attending this series will help individuals identify what is important to them, what their resources are, and how to effectively communicate their end-of-life wishes. The series may also be helpful to spouses or adult children as they anticipate the death of a family member. The hope for the whole series is that it will engage people in significant conversation with each other, and eventually with their loved ones. In addition we will be offering concrete tools, eg. on writing of wills, advance-care directives, etc.

There will be four sessions, all on Wednesdays, 10 – 11:30am, each with a different focus:

March 6, Introduction; Definitions of death (ethical, legal, spiritual, financial considerations)

March 20, Changes in the Medical Field; Options for hospice and palliative care

April 3, Spirituality and Family Concerns

April 17, Resources (who to talk to; health care directives; wills; finances)

Each of the four sessions will include one of the video programs developed by Bill Moyers for PBS (we’ve borrowed its title, “Conversations That Matter”), with guided discussion following the videos. Local experts who work in related fields will participate as presenters and panelists. Experts include: Karen Gervais, visiting St. Olaf professor of Philosophy specializing in ethics; Mary Carlson, nurse practitioner specializing in family practice; Susan Lohmann, Director of Social Services, Northfield Hospital & Clinics; Kathy Blomquist, Director of Home Care & Hospice, Northfield Hospital & Clinics; Catherine Kelley, Hospice Social Worker, Northfield Hospital & Clinics; Mary Carlsen, St. Olaf professor of Social Work; Jackie Dorsey, lawyer, Hvistendahl, Moersch, Dorsey & Hahn, P.A.; and Judd Lohmann, Senior investment manager, Carlson Capital Management.

There is a $20 fee for the series, and registration is required. Register through the Senior Center, 507-664-3700, or on-line, www.northfieldseniorcenter.org (through the “Sign-Ups+” button).

Yes, it’s true; records don’t always last long. Therefore no tears were shed when we realized that CVEC set another record for registrations in the current winter term, 227. This eclipses all previous registrations, for any term, since our founding in 1997.

Perhaps the credit for this should go to the fine performance of our Curriculum committee. We certainly have an impressive roster of classes and teachers for this term. Perhaps it’s because word-of-mouth is still the best form of publicity, and attendance keeps improving over the years. Whatever the reasons, we’re grateful, and we’ll not rest on our oars. Plenty of work for our board remains to be done.

Here is a picture of one of our most popular classes, the cinema class taught by Eric Nelson at the Nygaard theater, which totals 60 students. What people seem to like about this class is the guarantee of new material, the chance to discuss each movie with like-minded friends and an expert such as Eric, and the comfortable surroundings. TV just doesn’t quite compete! Ed
