Expanded description: I became aware of and attracted to CVEC through its Curriculum Director, Dan Sullivan, President Emeritus of St. Lawrence University. Very much as in the days of his presidency, we reached immediate agreement on what I might teach for CVEC. Because it seems important to include in the Kubrick class critical and production perspectives in addition to those we will raise in class discussions, students will receive a 5-6 page handout on each film before every session which contains insights into the movies and their making from critics, reviewers, cast and crew, and often from Stanley as well. These commentaries, chosen to be read after viewing the movies, will inform our discussions of the films without dictating their direction or conclusions. Three of the eight films (see below) are available for free viewing on Kanopy through a Northfield Public Library membership. All are available for rental viewing on Amazon or other streaming platforms at less than $5 each. Students should come to class prepared to discuss the week’s movie.
