Dana Strand: The Seventh Art – France Goes to the Movies


Course text

There will be no assigned text.  A locally produced packet of readings will be distributed in class, costing $8 (included in a $58 course fee: $50 tuition + $8 packet).


Expanded description

Brief readings (under 10 pages for each film) and prepared questions designed to provide guidance as students view the films before coming to class will complement lectures and discussions. Of course, students’ own questions and comments will be welcome. Films will be shown at 1:30 in FiftyNorth 106, each Monday of the term, beginning on April 1.

Week One:  Introduction to course and to basics of film analysis through a discussion of Jean Renoir’s A Day in the Country

Week Two:  Jean Renoir, The Rules of the Game (1939)

Week Three:  Jacques Duvivier, Pépé le Moko (1937)

Week Four:  Jean-Luc Godard, Breathless (1960)

Week Five:  Claire Denis, Chocolat (1988)

Week Six:  Michael Haneke, Caché (2005)

Week Seven:  Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Délicatessen (1991)

Week Eight:  ???? Wild Card (a TBA film based on class interest and previous discussions)
